Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Provocative 'Weak Men' Comments

England opener Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of comments made by skipper Ben Stokes about the dressing room not being "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder delivered this message in several interviews in the wake of England's loss in the second match of the Ashes series against Australia previously.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where England now face a series loss at the earliest opportunity, Stokes noted he had let his message to "drift around" among the playing group.

"I've done all the talking over the past two days that I required," remarked the England leader.

However, following Crawley made a knock of 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the media with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Consistent Messaging

The captain made the "fragile individuals" comment after his side suffered a loss in Brisbane to fall 2-0 down.

The team afterwards went on a break to Noosa between the second and third Tests.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, he said his team had held "honest" conversations and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their effort to stay in contention in the series.

Yet, the Kent batsman asserted the guidance from the captain and coach Brendon McCullum had remained consistent with their previous three years in leadership.

"It's been extremely upbeat, unchanged," said the opener. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with great liberty. We believed we were capable of something special going into this Test."

Australia On the Verge of Historic Series Victory

The opener's dismissal late on Saturday was part of a decisive three-wicket burst by Australian off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in a short spell – he also bowled Brook and Ben Stokes – left the chasing side six down for 207 in pursuit of a notional target of 435.

This means, the home team require four wickets on Sunday's last day to secure an unassailable 3-0 advantage with three Tests.

A loss will extend the English team's winless run in Australia to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth successive overseas Ashes series defeat.

The current battle will be completed in only 11 days of play – with England losing the first two Tests in rapid time respectively.

The last time 1921, when Australia sealed victory in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been decided so quickly. Australia have also triumphed in eleven days on two other instances in the modern era.

"This is disheartening," said Crawley. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and we're staring down the barrel at this point."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we'll definitely view it like that," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been tough. Australia is a very, very good team. It was inevitably tough coming here against them. They entered as the front-runners and they've proven why."

Pope's Place Under Scrutiny

While the opener's performance in Adelaide likely secures questions about his short-term future in the side, Ollie Pope looks under immense pressure for his spot in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 in England's second innings on Saturday, extending his modest returns against Australia.

Across sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has never made a half-century and averages 17.62.

A solitary other England player since 1900 – Amiss – has featured as many times in the top six in Ashes Tests and recorded a poorer average.

But, Crawley insisted any suggestion Pope is being scrutinised comes from "the media" – referring to the press – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," said he. "He has had a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has played some really good knocks. It is talk externally. There's no discussion like that on Ollie in the camp," Crawley concluded.
