The Film 'Together' Can Be Streamed, and It Might Make or Break Your Partnership.

Here's a challenge for those in enduring partnerships who enjoy the horror genre: Settle in with your loved one and view Together. The critically acclaimed 2025 movie has now made its streaming debut on the Hulu service. Outwardly, it might appear like standard biological terror, but inside Together lies a profound contemplation about the ways we decide to love our partners.

A Debut Feature Investigating Relationship Dynamics

Together marks the first full-length movie for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It stars actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as a couple named Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have been together for a decade. Having wed in actuality in 2017, the actors infuse a special spark to their characters, expertly portraying both the strengths and weaknesses of a committed partnership.

The narrative commences when Millie and Tim relocate from the big city to the rural area for Millie’s job. A commonly used narrative setup, sure, but that’s mostly where the cliches end. Together becomes as much a psychological exploration of the pair’s relationship as it is a film about physical terror.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While trekking near their new home, a tempest descends, and Millie and Tim tumble into an underground cave. After being trapped overnight there and managing to escape, a mysterious influence begins influencing the pair. This force induces a supernatural closeness between them that goes exceeding emotional intimacy.

The whole movie is a methodically building horror experience, blending moments of dreamlike terrors, disturbing (but not excessively graphic) body horror, and genuinely funny exchanges (sometimes amidst something horrific). The director skillfully blends these components neatly and delivers them in a slowly mounting aura of dread.

Nuanced Portrayals

A significant portion of Together is exclusively the two lead actors, and they masterfully render numerous complexities to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie's sense of self and feeling of intimacy is waning due to a distance. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his unwillingness to chase only his struggling artistic pursuits slowly bubbles to the surface.

Tim, on the other hand experiences isolation and cut off by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve left the city and far away from his support system. He fears the notion of completely losing his sense of self in Millie. This fear is intensified by the reality he can’t drive and is dependent on Millie for transportation.

The film's most intelligent aspect in this movie avoids making Tim or Millie the obvious villain.

Both characters face the kind of problems that are inherent in most partnerships over a long period. Deep down, they still love each other. They still laugh together, provide solace, and are vulnerable at times. But under the surface, there’s an persistent current of uncertainty about their future together.

Thematic Depth

While the paranormal elements in Together act as a metaphor for these concerns of excessive reliance and fully committing to another person, the symbolism does not come across as clumsy or heavy-handed. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes offer a brilliant analogue to the character-driven drama. Both the frights and the fights work together in a mutually beneficial way.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s ending, which remains unspoiled, has left audiences divided on the movie's final takeaway about enmeshed dynamics. It has been said that unattached audience members have seen the movie as a powerful case for remaining unattached. On the other hand, some couples who were in conflict found that the film ended up guiding them to resolve their issues.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own reaction could potentially serve as a telling indicator of how you view relationships. Will the conclusion plant feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you see yourself in one of the characters and feel frustration, or simply glance toward your other half and utter, “I’d do that for you”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an experiment you can embark on at this very moment.

Together is streaming on Hulu's platform now.
