Pat Cummins has taken 309 wickets in 71 Test matches with an average of 22.10.
The Australian chair of selectors the selector has stated that pace spearhead Cummins will be a central figure in the forthcoming England-Australia contest.
Speculation had been growing that the 32-year-old might sit out due to a persistent back stress problem that had not yet healed.
Earlier indications from the squad suggested no official announcement had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the Test matches kicking off on the 21st of November in Perth.
The selector shared that Cummins is "building up" and felt positive about the likelihood of participating.
"We're aware that time is getting short and various factors around that, not only the physical problem, but other factors as well," he commented.
"It's positive. [We are] really confident that he'll participate in a major part. Hopefully starting in Perth. Otherwise, we'll adjust."
Injury History
The captain missed the ODI and T20 games against New Zealand and India last month after examinations confirmed a stress reaction in his back.
He has a history of spinal problems, with setbacks in several earlier campaigns forcing him out of three Australian summers in four years.
He emphasized he would be bold in recovery efforts in his recovery plan to secure his spot for the Ashes.
He mentioned that he did not know if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his rehabilitation but acknowledged it was "getting tight" for him to be fit for the opener.
Contingency Plans
Should Cummins not be fit, ex-skipper Smith will take over the captaincy.
Versatile player Green was excluded lately from Australia's squad for their one-day international series against India as a preventive step because of discomfort in his torso.
Bailey described it as a "minor" injury and confirmed that he's scheduled to appear in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "well-prepared to deliver overs."
"Considerable effort has gone into creating the schedule for him to participate for the first Test as an dual-role player," Bailey explained.
"His involvement was limited to the starting games in any case. The way he swings the bat in limited-overs, if it causes any delay for 24 more hours, we just made the decision to approach this more conservatively."
